A quick shout-out to the volunteers who help run the pack — whether in small or big ways, the work you do benefits your own kid(s) in multiples.

Scouting America requires two (2) registered leaders to be present at everything, so the pack needs registered leaders in order to do anything.

Registered Leaders

Scouting America requires all adults 18+ to be registered and trained if they hold a position in the unit, or have direct contact with or supervision of youth for more than 16 hours/month or 32 hours/year.
Casual volunteering is welcome under the supervision of two registered leaders.

How to Register as a Leader

Becoming a leader is not effortless, but it's a lot less work than most people expect. There are three main gates: the adult application, the youth safety training, and the position-specific training.

Apply

Start an adult application through the Pack's Be a Scout page.

• This will walk you through creating or linking a Scouting America account, completing the paperwork for an application and background check, and paying the annual membership fee.
• Save your receipt - the Pack policy allows us to reimburse fees for successful adult applicants.
• Your application can not be processed and you can not be rostered until you complete the Scouting America portion of the Safeguarding Youth training (see below).

Safeguarding Youth

This is a three-step process: Scouting America training, California Mandated Reporter training, and Live Scan fingerprinting.
Complete Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) at My Scouting. Navigate to the site, sign in, and click on the dreary grey box with the Safeguarding Youth Training logos.

• This is a 90-minute one-time course that is available free of charge.
• It must be renewed every year with a 20-minute refresher course.
• Download or screenshot your completion certificate "just in case" and then contact the pack representative to let them know. They can then approve your application.

Within 30 days, complete your California AB 506 Mandated Reporter training through CaliforniaScouting.org and the WLACC Council.

• This is a two-hour one-time course that is available free of charge.
• Download or screenshot your completion certificate and follow the instructions for uploading it to californiascouting.org.

Within 30 days of the training, arrange for a Live Scan fingerprinting.

• The Scouting Council has a Live Scan machine that they often bring to meetings and events
• Otherwise, you'll have to get a Live Scan at a public location, these can charge $10-$40.

Position-specific training

As soon as you apply, you can take the one-time position-specific training at my.scouting.org. It's free and, with few exceptions, one-time online courses. The most popular for Cubs is the Den Leader Training module, but there are others for Committee Member and Cubmaster, to fill all your free time with copious guidance.
Once you complete position-specific training, you'll get a "Trained" patch to wear on your uniform, so it's also time to get a uniform.

• Pack 189 wears a tan uniform shirt that is available from the Scout Shop with or without patches. You will also need the World Scouting, Council/District, "1""8""9" numbers, and position-specific (den leader, cubmaster, etc.) patches.
• The standard Cubs bandana or the black 189 bandana are both acceptable. Any device can be used as a woggle, this does not need to be uniform-specific.
• Any olive-colored pants are fine, they don't need to be Scouting Official. Same with socks, if you're into that. I'm partial to Wrangler Cargo Pants and Darn Tough Socks
• Closed-toe shoes, 'natch.
